Top 5: London Days Out on a Budget

With the hustle and bustle of everyday life – the morning commutes, burnt-out buses, and stench of KFC that permeates the underground – it’s easy to forget what a lovely city London is. It’s not all chavs, riots and graffiti, you know – there are some absolutely charming places to visit. And the best bit? They’re right on your doorstep.

If last year’s Olympic Games proved anything, it’s that we should really venture outside our front door more often. There are plenty of delightful attractions in London, and they needn’t break the bank. So, if you’re stuck for somewhere to go and want to save money, check out our top 5 London days out for those on a budget.

Have you ever watched TV spook-fest, Most Haunted? Well, The London Dungeons is a lot like that, only without Yvette Fielding dressed like a rubbish Star Trek character. It’s basically a walk through London’s harrowing past, covering 2000 years of gruesome history that’s sure to make your heart stop beating. Perfect for kids and adults who can’t be bothered to read a book, The London Dungeons comes highly recommended.

4. The Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is an absolute beauty to behold. With over 70 million plant, animal, fossil, rock and mineral specimens to gawp at, its popularity is hardly surprising. From its terrifying Creepy Crawlies exhibit, to its gigantic Diplodocus that lords over the main hall, it’s a breathtaking (and utterly free) look at some of Mother Nature’s finest work.

3. London Zoo

Opened to the masses in 1847, London Zoo is home to more than 760 animal species – including both rare and endangered animals. Your entry fee contributes to worldwide conservation projects, so your visit can help animals around the globe. Plus, with new enclosures to see, including a £3.6m Tiger Territory, you’re sure to be amazed. There are also plenty of cafés and picnic spots, as well as educational and craft activities for children – making it the perfect day out for the whole family.

2. Sealife: London Aquarium

We all like to be beside the seaside, as the old jingle goes. Still, if you don’t have a car to travel to the coast, why not bring the coast to you? Or rather, what’s in it? Sealife: London Aquarium not only boasts hundreds of varieties of fish and sea creatures from all over the world, from stingrays to sharks, piranhas and sea scorpions – its famous ‘Shark Walk’ allows visitors/victims to hover over a glass platform with sharks circling just below their feet. Terrifying.

1. Science Museum

If you’ve had enough of Brian Cox grinning at you with his floppy, rock-and-roll hairdo, but still want to learn about the wonders of science, then the Science Museum might be for you. It’s not all about planets, moons and stars, either. The Science Museum features seven floors of educational and entertaining exhibits, including space exploration, as well as medical and engineering feats. The Science Museum is perfect for children and adults alike.
